The Calathea Makoyana is a graceful and striking houseplant that truly lives up to its nickname, the “Peacock Plant.” Its light green leaves feature a dark green, feathered pattern reminiscent of a peacock’s tail. The underside of the leaf is deep purple, creating a beautiful contrast when the leaves close in the evening. This plant follows the rhythm of day and night, folding its leaves at sunset — a subtle and soothing ritual that makes it a true ‘living plant.’
What makes the Makoyana unique within the Calathea family is its elegant, almost translucent leaf structure. It grows bushy and compact, with leaves that can reach up to 15 cm in size. Thanks to its refined shape and delicate pattern, it’s suitable for various spots in the home — from a small hanging planter to a decorative corner on a sideboard. Its exotic appearance makes it a favorite among interior stylists and plant lovers alike.
Beyond its aesthetic charm, the Calathea Makoyana is also functional: it’s non-toxic to pets and has mild air-purifying qualities. That makes it a safe and stylish choice for families, cat lovers, and anyone looking to give their interior a botanical upgrade. A plant with character, flair, and a kind heart.
Calathea Makoyana prefers a spot with indirect light or partial shade. Direct sunlight can fade its delicate leaf pattern and cause brown edges. Ideally, place it a few meters from an east- or north-facing window with filtered daylight. It enjoys a warm environment (around 20–25°C) and absolutely dislikes drafts or dry air from radiators.
As for watering: keep the soil lightly moist, but avoid letting the roots sit in water. Use rainwater or filtered water if possible, as tap water with high lime content can stress the roots and cause leaf issues. In spring and summer, water 2–3 times a week; in winter, once is usually enough. A drainage layer of clay pebbles helps remove excess water effectively.
Lastly, humidity is crucial. Makoyana comes from tropical rainforests and craves a moist atmosphere. Place it on a tray with pebbles and water, use a humidifier, or group it with other plants. Daily misting with lukewarm water also helps. Brown leaf edges or curling leaves are signs the air is too dry. Give it the jungle vibes it deserves, and it will reward you with its enchanting leaf display.
